Everything You’ve Ever Wanted to Know About Hiring a Doula on the Central Coast
If you’re pregnant and exploring your birth options, chances are you’ve come across the term "doula" OR if you’ve heard of it on the street, you might have been forgiven for thinking someone said “JEWELLER”.
So what exactly does a doula do, and how do we fit into your pregnancy and birth journey?
Whether you're planning a home birth, hospital birth, VBAC, or simply want a more supported experience, hiring a doula (on the Central Coast of course!!) can be one of the most empowering decisions you make.
I’m on a mission to make sure every woman knows support for her in birth and beyond exists, so here’s a list of FAQs and the answers!
What is a doula and what do they do?
A doula is a trained professional who provides emotional, physical, and informational support before, during, and after birth. Unlike midwives or obstetricians, doulas do not perform clinical tasks. Instead, we focus on making sure you feel informed, confident, and supported throughout your pregnancy and birth.
Central Coast doulas like me, offer services like birth planning, labour support, breathing and pain management techniques, and postpartum care. Think of a doula as your guide and cheerleader through one of the biggest transitions in life.
Is a doula the same as a midwife?
No, and this is a VERY common misconception. Midwives provide medical/clinical care during pregnancy, labour, and postpartum. Doulas provide non-medical, holistic support to enhance your emotional wellbeing and birth experience. On the Central Coast, many women choose to work with both a midwife and a doula for full-spectrum support.
What are the benefits of hiring a doula?
Research shows that having a doula reduces the likelihood of a caesarean, shortens labour, and increases overall satisfaction with the birth experience. With a Central Coast doula by your side, you're more likely to feel calm, in control, and confident—even when birth takes unexpected turns. Check out all the evidence about doulas here!
How much does a doula cost on the Central Coast?
Doula packages typically range from $1000 to $3000+, depending on experience level and services included. Most packages will include prenatal visits and birth education, emotional and physical support in labour, and postpartum follow-up or care. Some Central Coast doulas offer payment plans or sliding scale options too so it’s always worth reaching out for a chat to see if your doula can create a package within your budget.
When should I hire a doula?
Ideally, you should make contact with a doula as early as possible to check their availability and touch base. This means you will have the most choice, AND give you breathing room to make a decision that feels right. If you’re ready to go ahead, it’s never too early to sign on (plus, it means you’ll get the support for longer!!). However, many Central Coast doulas can accommodate last-minute bookings if their schedule allows so if you decide later on in your pregnancy, it’s still worth reaching out.
Do doulas support home births?
Yes, 100%!! Many doulas on the Central Coast, including myself, are experienced in supporting home births alongside midwives thanks to it now being a publicly subsided option through Gosford Hospital. Home birth is a safe and empowering choice for many women, and having a doula ensures continuous support in the comfort of your own home.
Can I hire a doula if I’m planning a hospital birth?
Absolutely, in fact, PLEASE consider it!!! It is often the environment where doulas are needed most because of the fragmented care models and the level of advocacy required within the hospital system. So whether you're birthing at Gosford Hospital, Wyong Hospital (if it ever reopens!), or a private facility, a doula will be your constant support person, helping you (and your partner) advocate for your choices.
What if I'm having a planned caesarean or epidural?
Doulas support all kinds of births - medicated, unmedicated, caesarean, or spontaneous vaginal birth. If you’re having a caesarean, your doula can still help you prepare emotionally, navigate hospital policies, and support you post-surgery.
Do doulas replace partners?
Not at all. Consider your doula an investment into your birth support team. In reality, doulas help partners feel more involved in the experience because we are able to help them be most useful. Your partner is your emotional anchor; your doula provides knowledge, tools, and guidance to help both of you feel confident and calm. We both have different roles and when you have BOTH, you’re set up for success.
Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.
Do doulas offer postpartum support?
Many do! Postpartum doulas help with newborn care, breastfeeding, emotional recovery, and household tasks. On the Central Coast, postpartum support is especially valuable as families adjust to life with a new baby.
What questions should I ask when hiring a doula?
What is your birth philosophy?
What’s included in your doula package?
How many births have you attended?
Do you support VBAC/home birth/caesarean?
What skills/training do you have that will come in handy?
