Doula In Demand

A 12-week live and interactive course filled with the business, brand and marketing modules your doula course might have left out!

Alice Worthy, The modern doula, is supporting a woman wearing a black underwear set in a white blow up birth pool while she is giving birth.

The difference a doula makes...

If I had a pill that could…

  • reduce your chance of having an Caesarean by 39%

  • increase your chance of going into spontaneous labour by 15%

  • reduce the chance of you needing medicinal pain relief in labour

  • shorten the length of your labour

  • increase the chances of you being satisfied with your birth

would you want it?! The answer is likely HELL YES!!!

The good news is that those statistics above come from a huge body of research reviewed by the Cochrane Collaboration that looked at the benefits of continuous support during labour.

The doula difference is that, in this case, continuous support comes from someone who knows and understands physiological birth, and has tools, techniques and advocacy skills to support you in working with pain in the hospital system or at home.

A doula can be the difference between a stressful, medicalised birth and a supported, confident and empowered experience.

And while the stats help, doula support can’t always be measured.

At the end of the day, having someone in your corner, guiding you & your partner and being a pillar of support is unmeasurable.

  • A birth doula is a skilled birth professional who helps you and your partner navigate pregnancy, labour and early postpartum with confidence.

Unlike midwives and OB/GYNs who provide clinical, medical care for you and your baby, a doula is focused purely on providing you with emotional, physical, informational and advocacy support during birth.

As a Central Coast doula, my job is to help you feel calm, prepared and excited for birth!

In a practical sense, that might look like…

    • supporting you in creating birth preferences

    • showing your partner physical, hands on pain relief techniques to support you

    • helping you navigate choices through pregnancy, birth and postpartum

    • being a safe space for you

    • helping you manage pain in labour

    • supporting you with Optimal Maternal Positioning (OMP) techniques

    & so much more!!

Think of a doula as your birth coach, your calm and steady presence, and your biggest hype woman all rolled in to one!

  • I became a certified birth and postpartum doula in 2022 with the Australian Doula College (it’s now known by another name).

I have attended multiple further education seminars in my time, including:

    • Melanie The Midwife’s Conference for Rebellious Midwives

    • Multiple OMP courses

    • Dr Hazel Keedle’s Birth After Caesarean workshop

    • Acupressure courses with Dr Kate Levett

    • Birth Mapping Course with Dr Bell

    • Matriarchs of Birth Workshop

I also became a certified Optimal Maternal Positioning Educator in 2025, and teach OMP for Parents courses regularly on the Central Coast, along with Kaia Birth Education classes.

Additionally, I have my own birth education course Birth Different, and have supported more than 50 families through all types of births (inductions, caesareans, twins, home births, private births and everything in between) on the Central Coast and across some Newcastle/Sydney hospitals too.

Having said this, there are currently no government regulation for doulas in Australia which means that training, experience and philosophy can vary wildly.

I encourage you to read through my recent client testimonials and reviews here to get a sense of my support and skill level.

  • I’m SO glad you asked!

My approach is all about blending evidence based birth support and education with the wisdom of traditional birth practices (without the fluff or the woo woo!)

You won’t find me charging crystals under the full moon or telling you to just ‘breathe through the waves’ of labour while chanting in the woods…

Instead, my approach is calm, grounded and SUPER practical. And while I still believe birth is powerful and transformative (once you experience it, you’ll know!), I also keep it relatable and real for modern women who are navigating work, family and our modern maternity system.

I’ll support you to trust your body and your instincts, while also giving you the skills, knowledge and practical tools to work with pain, not against it.

That might look like movement, pelvic alignment and OMP (optimal maternal positioning) techniques, hands-on comfort measures and helping your partner feel like an active part of the birth team.

I work collaboratively with midwives and obstetricians and have great relationships with many local care providers. My role isn’t to fight the system, but to help you move through it feeling informed, supported and in control of your choices.

At its heart, The Modern Doula is about making great birth support accessible and relevant for the modern woman, so she can go on to have a beautiful, positive and family centred birth.

I love a hug, I swear a bit (for emphasis of course) and will guarantee you that we’ll have a lot of fun along the way… because birth is all about oxytocin!

  • I’ve intentionally streamlined my offering to two solid packages (Savvy & Bold), not to fit your experience into a box, but because I know what I do best (and where the magic happens!).

Both of these packages are centred around birth support as it’s where my skillset sings!

And while the two packages give structure and inclusions, please know I will always go above and beyond to ensure you have what you need and will bend and flex to fit your unique journey.

If that means an extra session either side, or moving/adding sessions, we can absolutely work it out, let’s chat!

  • I support families right across the Central Coast, from Ettalong to Budgewoi and everywhere in between!

I attend both public and private births at Gosford Hospital as well as home births with private midwives.

Most of my work is based on the Central Coast, however depending on availability I occasionally support births slightly further afield, including The SAN (Sydney Adventist Hospital), Royal North Shore, Westmead (for high risk patients), John Hunter Hospital and Maitland Hospital.

If you're unsure whether I cover your area, feel free to reach out. I’m always happy to chat about your location and see if it might be a good fit.

  • Most women will book their Central Coast birth doula somewhere between 6-20 weeks pregnant.

Why? Because the earlier we start, the more time we have together and the more support you have!

Plus, with limited space each month, getting in early does ensure you have the most choice as Central Coast doulas do book up quickly!

But… if you’re later along in pregnancy, please don’t panic! I regularly support families who book their doula support on the Central Coast in the third trimester too.

It’s always worth reaching out as sometimes last minute availabilities do come up.

If you’d like to chat, book a totally obligation free connect call and we can discuss!

  • Midwives and doulas both support you during pregnancy and birth, and while our roles differ, we complement each other beautifully.

A midwife is a medical professional and is responsible for the clinical care of you and your baby. While they can and do provide emotional and physical support as well, midwives often have many other roles and conflicting priorities such as caring for multiple women at a time, taking detailed notes and working under the pressure of the system.

A doula, while not medically trained, is a skilled birth professional who focuses purely on the continuous emotional, physical, informational and advocacy support of you and your partner.

As a doula is privately employed by you, we have no policy or procedural guidelines to follow, and will help you remain in the driver’s seat of your experience.

  • Anything that gives you continuity of care is amazing and will make a HUGE difference.

But a midwife/OB and a doula have very different roles.

Your health care provider is responsible for you & your baby’s clinical care, monitoring vitals, looking for medical concerns, and ensuring you and your baby are medically safe.

They also often work within the hospital system and are bound by those policies, procedures and protocols (not all of which are evidence based).

A birth doula focuses entirely on continuous emotional and physical support for you and your partner.

In practical terms, that means I’m there to:

    • support through contractions

    • guide labour positions, breathing and movement

    • help your partner feel confident to support you

    • protect your birth environment

    • ensure you feel supported to make hell-yes decisions

    • keep you grounded and present, whichever path your birth takes.

Midwives are incredible, but they also have clinical responsibilities and multiple priorities in the birth suite.

A Central Coast doula is the one person supporting you the entire time, without shift changes or hospital policies getting in the way.

So… MGP care/OB/midwife AND a doula? Essentially a match made in heaven.

  • Absolutley!

Supporting physiological birth doesn’t mean ignoring modern medicine!!

As a Central Coast Doula, I am extremely passionate about protecting and encouraging physiological birth, and love working women who are aligned with this philosophy.

But as someone who’s experienced medical intervention and pain relief personally and through my work as a doula, I know there’s a time and place for everything.

This is why we prepare in pregnancy for any possible scenario, and I will support your decisions and choices wholeheartedly, without judgement.

A positive birth is not about whether or not you had an epidural or not. It’s about having an experience where you feel strong, supported and proud.

    That’s my main goal!

  • The cost of hiring a Central Coast doula can vary depending on experience, training and the level of support included.

Most birth doulas will charge anywhere from around $2k-$4k, which includes far more than just attending your birth.

Doula support typically begins early on in pregnancy and continues into the early postpartum period, often spanning 6-12 months of guidance, education, preparation and support.

Your investment usually includes things like:

    • multiple antenatal prep sessions

    • education around pregnancy, birth, postpartum and your individual options along the way

    • partner preparation and hands on comfort techniques

    • access to library, resources and birth tools (like TENS machines, birth slings, etc)

    • on call support during the most vulnerable stage of pregnancy

    • continuous support during labour and birth

    • immediate postpartum support

I also offer payment plans for all packages which allows families to spread the investment over time.
