My go-to recipes as a doula
Here’s a little insight into my DMs when I post a picture of the food I’m making for clients…
“omg recipe please!”
"not postpartum but can I please order?”
“do you have a recipe book?”
And while I’m flattered darls, no, I don’t have a recipe book! I will be the first to admit that the things I make for clients postpartum nearly always come from another incredible cook, although I do make swaps here and there for what I’ve got handy or what I know will be a better choice for a mother in her early days of recovery.
But, because I too always need inspo and I’m forever forgetting where I’ve saved that one meal I wanted to make, I thought I’d include everything here in one handy dandy resource that you can bookmark and come back to any time you want to make something quick, easy and nourishing (cause all these recipes are just that!).
Whether it’s for a friend who’s just had a baby, meal prepping for yourself and your own family, or you’re a doula who needs some inspiration, I hope this can be a one-stop-shop for you.
I’ll link as much as I can, but of course, some of my favourite recipes come from other incredible women who have their own cook books. I’ll link them below, and share my favourites from each resource:
Favourite Cookbooks
Village for Mama by Leila Armour
This cook book is such a beautiful resource for postpartum and makes a beautiful gift. It includes recipe cards which would be perfect for a mother blessing or baby shower as people can take them home, make them and delivery to you!
My favourite recipes from VFM are:
* Ginger & Miso Congee
* Green Bites
* Turkey Bites
* Mexican Power Rolls
The First Forty Days by Heng Ou
When I got this this book, I was at first disappointed that it was not FILLED with recipes… until I realised this book is SO. MUCH. MORE. than a recipe book. The first half of this book is all about postpartum traditions, and is a huge reminder that we are legit one of the few countries that has it SO WRONG when it comes to how we care for mothers in their postpartum. Once you’ve got a good understanding of what’s required, the recipes mean so much more.
My favourites from The First Forty Days are:
* Chicken Broth
* Chicken, red dates & ginger soup
* Seasonal greens soup
* Cheesy crackers
* Peanut butter & honey rice crispy treats
Cocoon: Food to Fuel by By Naomi Chrisoulakis
I love this cookbook because it’s an e-version which means I have it on hand ALL THE TIME. The recipes are so simple, easy to use with minimal ingredients making it a go-to resource for me.
My favs from Food to Fuel are:
* Lemony Pumpkin & Coconut Soup
* Coconut Beef Curry
* Apricot, coconut, lime & cashew balls
* Nepalese Rice Pudding
* Nutty Prune Slice
Ok… now for the recipes. Let’s break it down by category.
