The Ultimate Birth Prep Checklist for First-Time Mums | A Central Coast Doula’s Guide

I totally get it, pregnancy can feel like one long to-do list. Between appointments, shopping for baby supplies, and trying to make sense of the endless advice online, it's easy to wonder if you're actually prepared for birth.

If you're a first-time mum, here's my ultimate birth prep checklist to help you feel more informed, confident, and ready for your amazing, powerful birth!!

1. Understand How Birth Works

Birth is a physiological process, but most of us grow up learning more about dramatic TV births than how labour actually unfolds. Spend time learning about:

  • The stages of labour

  • Birth hormones

  • Pain management options

  • The role of movement and positioning

  • Medical interventions and when they may be recommended

  • Informed choice & advocacy in the system

Knowledge can help reduce fear and increase confidence, and give you a really good understanding of what your body is capable of! As a certified Optimal Maternal Positioning educator, I teach regular group workshops on the Central Coast (check out the dates here). I also regularly teach the Kaia Birth program which is a great all-rounder birth education course (check out the dates here)

2. Build Your Support Team

Think about not just who you want to manage your care during pregnancy, but also who you want around you during labour and postpartum. This might include:

  • Your partner

  • A doula

  • Midwives/OB

  • Family members

  • Close friends

The right support can make a significant difference to your birth experience, and choosing your care provider has a BIG impact on your birth outcomes. Not sure which model of care would best suit? Take the FREE model of care quiz here

3. Create a Birth Plan Document

Once you have a good grasp of the type of birth you want, it’s important to detail your preferences and discuss with your care provider. Research indicates that those with a birth plan have more positive birth experiences, so it really is a no-brainer! Grab the Birth Plan template I use with all my 1:1 clients HERE! In your plan, be sure to detail your preferences around:

  • Your environment

  • Pain relief

  • Monitoring & vaginal exams

  • Birth positions

  • Plan B & C preferences

  • Inductions

  • Caesarean birth

  • Immediate postpartum care

  • Feeding

4. Prepare Your Mind as Well as Your Body

Birth preparation isn't just about packing a hospital bag and drinking raspberry leaf tea. It’s also really important to work on your positive birth mindset.

Practice:

  • Breathing techniques

  • Relaxation exercises

  • Visualisation

  • Understanding labour coping strategies

  • Practicing being in discomfort and strengthening your mental resilience

5. Stay consistent and regular

One of the biggest challenges in birth preparation is actually sticking to it and staying consistent.

That's where Ripple comes in. Ripple is a pregnancy and birth app designed to help you prepare for birth with evidence-based education, expert masterclasses, practical tools, and a supportive community. Instead of spending hours scrolling social media, you can access trusted information in one place and learn what actually matters for birth preparation, and stay consistent and regular with expert doula support.

Final Thoughts

The best birth prep isn't about controlling every outcome. It's about understanding your options, building confidence, and preparing for whatever path your birth takes. It’s also about setting aside time to get to know your body and your baby, and to start to train for your peak physical performance.

Start early, stay curious, and remember: informed parents make empowered decisions.
