What I Wish Every First Time Mum Knew Before Birth | From A Central Coast Doula

If you're pregnant with your first baby, you've probably asked yourself a hundred times: "How do I know if I'm ready for birth?"

The truth is that nobody feels completely prepared. But understanding a few key concepts can help you walk into labour feeling significantly more confident.

These are the things I wish every birthing woman knew before walking in to her birth.

  1. Birth Is More Than Dilation

Many parents are surprised to learn that labour progress isn't just about how many centimetres dilated you are. We are SO focused on getting to 10cm, that we forget the baby has a LOT of work to do to still be born. Most women are shocked to realise that you could be 10cm and still end up in a caesarean if your baby does not have enough space or freedom of movement.

Your baby's position, your movement, your environment, and your body's hormonal response all play important roles in how labour unfolds.

This is why I teach Optimal Maternal Positioning because it helps create space in the pelvis for babies to navigate efficiently. If this is something you’re interested in learning, check out the dates of my local Central Coast workshops here.

Your Environment Matters

Birth hormones thrive when you feel:

  • Safe

  • Supported

  • Private

  • Relaxed

Simple things like dim lighting, music, familiar support people, and reducing interruptions can help create an environment that supports labour. It’s really important to detail these requests on your birth plan so that your midwife/support on the way can help create this environment in order for your labour to progress. If you’re not sure where to start, download the birth plan template I use with ALL my 1:1 clients HERE.

Labour Pain Is Different

Unlike pain from injury, labour pain is produced by healthy muscles and tissues working as they are designed to.

While labour can be intense, understanding what's happening in your body can change how you experience those sensations because often it is not the pain itself that we can’t cope with: it’s the meaning that we give to that pain.

I teach how to change this mindset inside Ripple, my birth preparation app! Join today and take advantage of the weekly private podcast, monthly LIVE masterclasses & Q&As and on-tap doula support.

You Don't Need to Memorise Everything

One of the biggest mistakes first-time parents make is trying to learn everything all at once.

Instead, focus on:

  • Understanding your options

  • Learning practical coping strategies

  • Building confidence in decision-making

  • Knowing where to access trustworthy information

Consider Using a Pregnancy App

Many parents use a pregnancy app throughout pregnancy, but not all apps are created equal!!

While some apps focus primarily on baby size comparisons and weekly updates, Ripple goes a step further by helping women prepare for birth itself. Through expert-led education, birth preparation resources, masterclasses, and community support, Ripple helps bridge the gap between being pregnant and feeling genuinely ready for labour and birth with the practical, implementation of the tools and techinques.

Final Thoughts

You don't need to know everything before labour begins, your body is MADE to do this!!!

The goal isn't perfection. It's preparation, confidence, and having access to reliable support when you need it most.

Join Ripple today and feel supported in your birth preparation journey.
