Why Movement, Pelvic Alignment & Pelvic Mobility Matters In Birth

As an experienced and skilled doula on the Central Coast, I know first hand just how important pelvic alignment and mobility is in birth. It’s a huge reason why I teach Optimal Maternal Positioning (OMP) workshops here on the Central Coast, because I know what a HUGE difference it can make.

Birth isn’t just about dilation, but it seems to get the spotlight in modern maternity care.

Labour progresses as your baby moves through the pelvis and completes a series of rotations known as the cardinal movements of birth. When baby’s position and the pelvis are working together, labour tends to flow more efficiently.

That’s why many families looking for a highly experienced Central Coast birth doula are interested in doulas who understand movement, positioning and pelvic alignment during labour. After seeing more and more posterior labours in my work as a Doula, I knew it was time to up the skillset, and that’s why I did my OMP Educator certification - so I could help more parents utalise their bodies in ways that actually make a difference

What is OMP?

Optimal Maternal Positioning (OMP) is a specialised training that teaches how to support labour through maternal movement, body positioning and pelvic alignment techniques.

These techniques help create more space within the pelvis, encourage baby to find a more optimal position and support the natural physiology of labour.

OMP techniques can be especially helpful when:

• Labour feels slow or “stuck” or is not progressing
• Baby is navigating the pelvis and having some difficulty
• A birthing person needs relief from intense contractions
• Trying to encourage physiological labour progression

For parents working with a Central Coast birth doula, this type of hands-on support can make a meaningful difference during labour.

Why training matters

Not all doulas are trained in advanced bodywork or positioning techniques. For families searching for a doula on the Central Coast, experience and continued education can make a real difference.

Through OMP training, I have learnt practical strategies including:

• Labour positions that open different areas of the pelvis at the right time
• Techniques to encourage baby’s rotation and descent
• Hands-on support that partners can participate in
• Comfort measures that support both progress and relief

These skills allow a highly experienced birth doula on the Central Coast to support labour in a way that works with the body — not against it.

Learn OMP techniques before birth

The best part about OMP (Optimal Maternal Positioning) is that these powerful positioning techniques aren’t just for doulas!! Expectant parents can also learn them before labour and incorprate them into their pregnancy routine (and honestly, that’s where I truly see the biggest difference - when couples have practiced before birth).

My OMP workshops right here on the Central Coast, teach couples how to use movement, positioning and pelvic alignment to support labour progress, while giving partners practical ways to stay involved and helpful during birth.

If you’re preparing for birth and want practical skills that go beyond theory, you can learn more about upcoming OMP courses on the Central Coast and if you’re 20+ weeks, you can book your spot HERE.

Not based on the Central Coast? Never fear!! You can check out the online course HERE.
